OG+ Printable Decoding Cards Activity Set - K-2
The goal of segmenting and blending sounds is to increase reading fluency.
The OG+ Decoding Cards Activity Set follows the OG+ K-2 scope and sequence. The printable cards come with two different options, blending board cards and word cards. Print, cut and laminate the cards for use year after year.
Blending Board Cards:
Teach students to point to the dots under the graphemes (letters) while simultaneously saying the corresponding phonemes (sounds). Have students start on the green dot, then yellow and red. After segmenting the sounds the student will draw a line left to right across the arrow while simultaneously blending the sounds together to make the syllable.
Word Cards:
These cards can be used for many different practice activities and games. Each word has 2 cards that follow the concepts in the OG+ Scope and Sequence.
Game Ideas:
Matching: The object of the game is to collect the most pairs of cards. Make sure there are two cards for each word, either both blending board cards, or word cards, or a combination of both. Shuffle the cards and lay them all facing down in rows so the words are not visible. Player 1 takes a turn flipping over and reading 2 cards. If they match, the player keeps the cards and gets another turn. If they do not match, the player returns the cards back to the same spot face down and gives the next player a turn. Continue until all cards are matched.
Go Fish: The object of the game is to collect the most pairs (or 4 of a kind). Make sure there are 2 (or 4) word cards for each word. Deal 5 cards to each player and put the remaining cards in a pile. Players look at their own cards but do not show them to others. Pick a player to go first. The first player asks another player for a word card, “Jasmine, do you have the word cuff?” If she has the card she gives it to the player to make a match and that player gets another turn. If she does not have the card, she will say, “Go fish!” You will choose a card from the pile and it is the next player's turn. The game is over when all of the cards have been matched.
Splat (One Player): The object of the game is for the student to read and collect as many cards as he/she can. Place concepts for review facing down in a pile. Add one or more cards into the deck that say "SPLAT". Have the student pull cards, one at a time, from the pile as quickly as he/she can until the SPLAT card is drawn. The round is over each time a SPLAT card is drawn. Count up how many cards were read and collected each round and distribute points.
Jump Down the Line: Line up the cards on the floor with enough space in between to jump. The student stands facing the first word. They read the word while jumping over the word. If they read it correctly, they get to pick up the card. Continue down the line until all of the cards have been picked up.
