Orton-Gillingham for Everyone

While Orton-Gillingham has long been associated with dyslexia, IMSE has spent the last 30 years advocating for the use of the Orton-Gillingham method in every classroom. The Orton-Gillingham methodology is a Science of Reading-backed, direct, multi-sensory teaching strategy with systematic, sequential lessons focused on phonics.

What Is the Science of Reading?

The Science of Reading is a comprehensive body of research that draws from years of scientific knowledge across various languages and contributions from experts in education, special education, literacy, psychology, neurology, and more.

This research offers conclusive and empirically supported insights into how we learn to read, the essential skills involved, their interactions, and the brain regions responsible for reading development.

What Is Structured Literacy?

Structured Literacy™ is an evidence-based best practice approach for teaching foundational literacy skills created by the International Dyslexia Association.

Structured Literacy supports explicit, sequential, systematic, prescriptive, diagnostic, and cumulative instruction to benefit all learners, both general education and remedial.

Understanding How It All Comes Together in the Classroom

As teachers, IMSE knows the work that goes into making sure each student can succeed in reading. Our goal is to customize your curriculum to include Orton-Gillingham instruction and empower educators to focus on what matters most—supporting students' reading success.

IMSE uses Science of Reading research to drive all the instruction. The Theoretical Models of Reading (Gough and Tunmer’s Simple View of Reading, Hollis Scarborough’s The Reading Rope, Linnea Ehri’s The Four Phases of Word Reading, and Seidenberg and McClelland’s The Four Part Processing Model for Word Recognition) are the backbone of our 30-hour Structured Literacy Professional Development trainings.

By focusing on these research-based models, educators can teach all their students the essential components of literacy, such as phonics, phonemic awareness, morphology, word recognition, comprehension, and more!
